Bronzeville Steps Back Into Its Jazz Roots — and the Music Has Never Sounded Sweeter

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Bronzeville ·

Bronzeville's legendary jazz legacy came alive again this past Saturday as neighbors, historians, and music lovers gathered for 'At The Forum: The Bronzeville Roots of Chicago Jazz' — a free, community-led celebration tied to UNESCO's International Jazz Day. The event centered on the neighborhood's storied Forum Hall at 318-328 E. 43rd St., a nearly 130-year-old performance venue where icons from Nat King Cole to Sun Ra once graced the stage.

The day was packed with live performances — including an experimental jazz set by musician and composer Angel Bat Dawid inside the soon-to-open Forum Cafe next door — plus a guided neighborhood walk past the actual homes and haunts of jazz legends. Tour guide Shani 'Lady Sunshine' Smith of the Black Cornerstones Project led attendees past sites like Nat King Cole's former home at 4023 S. Vincennes Ave. and Louis Armstrong's residence at 421 E. 44th St., weaving oral history and live music into an unforgettable afternoon. 'We want neighbors to meet each other,' Smith said, 'and connect around [their community's history].'

The timing couldn't be better — the Forum Cafe is set to open its doors soon, bringing a new gathering space to one of Bronzeville's most historically significant corridors. If you missed Saturday's walk, don't fret: the International Jazz Day All-Star Global Concert streams free Thursday at 7 p.m. at yt.be/jazzday. Keep an eye on the Forum Hall block — Bronzeville's jazz heartbeat is very much alive.
