Printer's Row Pours On the Charm: Vitalogy Bar Opens in a 142-Year-Old South Loop Building
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/South Loop ·
South Loop's historic Printer's Row just got a compelling new reason to linger. Vitalogy, a brand-new neighborhood bar, has opened inside the ground floor of a 142-year-old building, brought to life by owners Jennifer Wilson and James Shields. The duo transformed the storied space into a warm, inviting hangout complete with a long wooden bar, reclaimed fixtures, and — in a touch that's equal parts quirky and clever — a hydroponic herb garden behind the bar. Think globally, drink locally: Vitalogy's menu spans international beers, Chicago-inspired cocktails (the "Second City Milk Punch" with Malört is already getting buzz), and a small-plates menu crafted by a chef friend of the owners.
But Wilson and Shields aren't just opening a bar — they're building a community anchor. The pair envision Vitalogy as a true neighborhood hub, with happy hour deals, hands-on cocktail classes, and live music nights on the calendar. For a stretch of South Loop that's long celebrated its literary and architectural heritage, Vitalogy feels like a natural fit: a place where history, craft, and community pour together in one glass.
Meanwhile, construction momentum continues across the neighborhood. At 626 S. Wabash Ave., crews have already poured concrete past the second level on a future 19-story tower that will bring 164 units and ground-floor retail to the Sloop — with a target opening of fall 2026. South Loop is building its future, one story at a time. Have you stopped into Vitalogy yet? Drop your first impressions in the Socialhood community!
