Garden, Groceries & Coffee: Good Earth Is Bringing a Greenhouse and Café to Galewood's Long-Vacant Harlem Ave. Corner

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Galewood ·

Galewood's most stubbornly empty lot is finally getting a worthy tenant — and it's a good one. Good Earth, a family-owned garden center and café from River Forest, has been announced as the future occupant of the long-vacant former McDonald's building at 1933 N. Harlem Ave. The business will feature a greenhouse, a fresh market stocked with produce from local farmers, and a café designed to serve as a neighborhood gathering spot.

Plans for the site include a renovation of the existing building for retail space, an expanded patio, and a brand-new 3,000-square-foot greenhouse to be built right on the property. The concept mirrors Good Earth's popular River Forest location at 7900 Madison St., which already combines a garden center, florist, and café under one roof — and regularly hosts community events celebrating everything from the spring equinox to Earth Day. Owner Cronin noted that the decision to come to Galewood was no accident: "It's got great people living here, beautiful homes and people who like to garden, who like markets," she said. Several neighbors at the community presentation on April 25th even recognized Good Earth from visits to the River Forest location.

For a corner that has sat vacant for roughly two decades — and survived a rejected five-story rental proposal and a failed car wash plan — this news is nothing short of a neighborhood win. Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th) called it "a great opportunity, not just for the ward, but for the immediate neighborhood." Stay tuned to galewoodneighbors.org and Good Earth's website for updates on the opening timeline.
