A Streeterville Hotel Is Becoming 221 New Homes — and the Address Couldn't Be Cooler

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Streeterville ·

Another Streeterville address is getting a second act — and this one comes with serious architectural pedigree. Plans were just revealed this week for the full residential conversion of 201 East Walton Place, the 18-story building that currently operates as Sonesta Extended Stay Suites. Developer Churchwick Partners, who snapped up the property and secured a $68 million construction loan, is transforming the mid-century structure into 221 apartments — a mix of 110 studios, 80 one-bedrooms, and 31 two-bedroom homes. The building sits right at the corner of North Mies Van Der Rohe Way, a location that's pure Streeterville elegance.

Chicago-based design firm bKL Architecture is leading the interior redesign, reimagining what were once hotel rooms into real residential layouts. Future residents will enjoy a lounge, fitness room, coworking space, dog run, and small outdoor terraces — plus a 72-vehicle parking garage that stays put. The team is aiming for zoning approval by fall, with the hotel closing in December and construction wrapping up for a mid-2027 opening.

It's the latest sign that Streeterville's housing momentum is genuinely unstoppable. From lakefront towers to mid-century gems, the neighborhood keeps reinventing itself with homes for all kinds of Chicagoans. Would you live at 201 E. Walton? Sound off in the Socialhood comments — we'd love to hear what draws you to this corner of the neighborhood!
