Last Call at Holiday Club, Hello Trader Joe's: Uptown Marks an End — and a Long-Awaited Beginning

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Uptown ·

Uptown is feeling bittersweet and buzzing all at once this week, as one beloved neighborhood institution prepares to close its doors while a grocery-store dream decades in the making inches closer to reality.

First, the farewell: Holiday Club, the retro-cool bar that has anchored 4000 N. Sheridan Road since 2001, has announced it will close on May 17 — its final night after 25 years of '90s dance parties, backroom celebrations, and unforgettable neighborhood memories. The closure makes way for a new apartment complex at the corner of Sheridan and Irving Park Roads, but owner Sonny Domingo isn't giving up on the brand entirely — he's actively exploring the possibility of relocating Holiday Club to a new home. Regulars have already been gathering to soak it all in before the lights go down for the last time.

On the brighter side of Uptown's ever-evolving landscape, the neighborhood's long-running Trader Joe's saga is officially coming to a happy ending. A building permit has been issued confirming Trader Joe's will build out a store at 804 W. Montrose Ave. — a storefront that has cycled through several short-lived grocers since its debut at the base of the 811 Uptown tower. The beloved specialty grocer is a win that Far North Siders have lobbied for years. And over on Clark Street, The Anderson — a sleek new five-story apartment building at 4713 N. Clark — is wrapping up construction and welcoming its first residents this month.
