West Englewood's Elevated Nature Trail Gets a Real Timeline — and 1,400 Trees Are Part of the Story

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Englewood ·

Big news is growing — literally — above the streets of West Englewood. A freshly updated construction timeline for the long-anticipated Englewood Nature Trail dropped this week, giving neighbors the clearest picture yet of what's coming to this former railroad corridor. The trail will stretch 1.8 miles from South Damen Avenue on the west all the way to South Halsted Street on the east, crossing 26 bridges that range from 11 to 29 feet wide — wide enough to host sculptures, seating areas, and a variety of community activations along the route. Critically, all 11 entry points will be fully ADA-accessible, ensuring the trail is genuinely open to everyone.

The path forward, however, requires some careful groundwork first. Initial prep will include soil remediation, grading, and structural repairs to existing viaducts — work that will also affect more than 1,400 trees that have naturally taken root on the corridor over the years. The project team says they are working to preserve and restore as many of those trees as possible — a detail that speaks to how much living green infrastructure already exists along this future trail. The vision is for the trail to anchor a broader Englewood Agro-Eco district, threading together the neighborhood's growing network of urban farms and green spaces into one connected destination.

Meanwhile, R.A.G.E. (Resident Association of Greater Englewood) has a community gathering on the books for May 19 at Johnson College Prep — another chance for neighbors to stay plugged into the momentum shaping West Englewood's future.
