Skate, Art & Community Pride: McKinley Park's Marshfield Courts Gets a Fresh Start — Plus a Season of Celebrations
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Mckinley Park ·
McKinley Park is proving once again that community spirit runs deep on the Southwest Side — and two big stories this week show exactly why neighbors keep showing up for each other.
First, the neighborhood's beloved DIY skate park at Marshfield Courts is writing an exciting new chapter. The City of Chicago-owned property is in the process of a formal property adoption, giving the grassroots skate spot a more secure and vibrant future. Even better, Marshfield Courts is now hosting new monthly art exhibitions running all the way through October — including a freshly installed skateboarding-inspired painting by a local artist. Want to get involved? Mark your calendar for Sunday, May 17, when the Trash People of McKinley Park will kick off a community Skate Park Cleanup at 10 a.m., starting right at the courts before fanning out to pick up litter in the surrounding neighborhood. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is also on the horizon once property adoption plans are finalized — a true milestone for a space built entirely on neighborhood hustle and heart.
Meanwhile, the McKinley Park Civic Association just wrapped its 53rd consecutive annual banquet — a remarkable streak of honoring the educators and volunteers who make this community shine. This year's community service award went to neighbor Jim Krok, and the Association also announced college scholarship winners through a new scholarship program, investing directly in the neighborhood's next generation.
From skate ramps to scholarship stages, McKinley Park keeps showing up. Visit mckinleypark.news to follow the Marshfield Courts ribbon-cutting news and connect with the Civic Association.
