History in the Making: Bryn Mawr Avenue Pursues Landmark Status — Plus, 6311arts Lights Up Edgewater with a Vibrant New Exhibition

Edgewater's architectural soul is about to get the official recognition it deserves. A three-block stretch of Bryn Mawr Avenue — packed with some of Chicago's most stunning Victorian-era and Jazz Age residential buildings — is on the path to becoming the Bryn Mawr Avenue Landmark District. The city's Department of Planning and Development brought the proposal before the Commission on Chicago Landmarks this past Thursday, seeking a preliminary designation for the 15-building district running between Sheridan Road and Broadway. The proposed district includes beloved landmarks like the cream-and-green Belle Shore Apartments and the Tudor-styled Manor House — buildings constructed between 1897 and 1929 that form what city staffers called "a distinctive and remarkably intact group" of architectural styles. Edgewater Historical Society President John Holden noted the street had "a bit of a renaissance 30 years ago" after tough decades, and this landmark push feels like the crown jewel of that comeback.

Meanwhile, creativity is blooming just up Clark Street. Edgewater community arts hub 6311arts (6311 N. Clark St.) is launching its May Exhibition on Saturday, May 16, with an opening reception from 6–9 p.m. The showcase runs through July 4 and brings together Chicago artist Brad Gibbs' mixed-media works alongside Art on the Edge, a presentation from Austin Special Chicago — a program empowering adults with developmental disabilities through arts-centered community engagement. Best of all, the event is free and open to the public.

From century-old buildings earning their stripes to inclusive art filling gallery walls, Edgewater is celebrating its past and embracing its future all at once. Visit edgewater.org and 6311arts.org to stay connected!
