Cut, Paste & Celebrate: Archer Heights Is About to Host the Southwest Side's First-Ever Zine Library Launch Party
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Archer Heights ·
Something genuinely new is coming to Archer Heights — and it's the kind of DIY, community-powered event that could only happen on the Southwest Side. On Saturday, May 23, the Archer Heights Branch Library will host the Southwest Side Zine Library Launch Party, a free afternoon celebration running from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. that marks the debut of a brand-new community zine collection for the neighborhood and surrounding area.
For the uninitiated, zines are self-published, independent booklets — part art project, part storytelling, part grassroots publishing — and they've long been a creative outlet for communities that want to tell their own stories on their own terms. A Southwest Side Zine Library means neighbors can browse, borrow, and contribute handmade publications that reflect the real voices and cultures of this corner of Chicago. It's a meaningful addition to a neighborhood with deep roots in both Polish and Mexican heritage, and a creative community that doesn't always see itself reflected in mainstream media.
And the cultural programming doesn't stop there. The Archer Heights Branch Library is also screening The Princess Bride (1987) for free on Saturday, May 17, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. — a beloved classic perfect for families looking for a weekend afternoon adventure. Between the zine launch and the film series, the library is stacking up reasons to stop in this month. Head to chipublib.org/locations/5 to see the full lineup and mark your calendar.
