Palmer Square Park Gets Its Moment to Shine: Volunteer Day and Arboretum Status Put the Neighborhood's Green Heart on the Map
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Palmer Square ·
Palmer Square neighbors, your beloved park — already one of Chicago's most treasured green spaces — is having a big month, and there's a chance for you to be part of it. The Palmer Square Park Council has announced it will participate in the Chicago Parks Foundation's annual "It's Your Park Day" on Saturday, May 30, from approximately 10 a.m. to noon. Rather than a standard cleanup, this year's effort will focus on mulching the park's iconic tree canopy, with the possibility of also adding stone dust to fill in low spots along the running trail if enough volunteers turn out. No Park Council membership is required — everyone is welcome, and youth groups like Scouts, Navigators, and Jr. ROTC are especially encouraged to join.
The timing couldn't be more fitting. Palmer Square Park recently earned formal recognition as an arboretum through ArbNet, the international arboretum accreditation network — a nod to over 45 years of grassroots community stewardship. What started in 1980 with just 27 trees has grown into a nearly 8-acre collection of 28 species, including hybrid elms sourced from the Morton Arboretum, native hackberry, catalpa, and serviceberry. Those are the very trees neighbors will be mulching on May 30.
