Live Music, Free Food, and Community Power: West Englewood's 'Save Our SNAP' Block Party Is This Saturday
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Englewood ·
West Englewood is turning advocacy into a celebration this weekend — and everyone's invited. The Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) and the Greater Chicago Food Depository are teaming up to host the 'Save Our SNAP' Block Party this Saturday, noon to 6 p.m., right in the heart of the neighborhood at Go Green Griot Plaza, 1201 W. 63rd St. The free, all-day event features live performances from local artists Heavy Crownz, Shawnee Dez, Nico Segal, DJ Cash Era, and more, alongside creative workshops and community activations.
The gathering comes at a critical moment: federal SNAP cuts that took effect this month have put food assistance at risk for thousands of Chicagoans. Neighbors who attend can connect with volunteer opportunities and learn about exemptions that could protect their benefits. Just steps away, IMAN's Food and Wellness Center at 1216 W. 63rd St. — which opened in West Englewood in 2021 — continues offering a client-choice pantry model where residents browse and shop with dignity, like a grocery store. The center has seen a surge in visitors in recent months and remains a cornerstone of food security on the block.
IMAN's director of communications framed the event as more than a one-time moment, calling it 'an entryway or continual path for people to get involved in whatever capacity they have.' Don't miss this Saturday's block party — bring the family, enjoy the music, and stand with your neighbors at Go Green Griot Plaza.
