Albany Park Is Getting a Music and Arts Hub on Lawrence Avenue — and the Community Is Behind It
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Albany Park ·
Big news for Albany Park's creative community: a long-vacant building at 3741 W. Lawrence Avenue is set to be transformed into a vibrant cultural and performing arts hub called The Workshop — and the City of Chicago is helping make it happen. The project received a Community Development Grant through the city's TIF (Tax Increment Financing) program, and according to city planning documents, it has earned an overwhelming 92.6% approval rating from neighborhood residents through a community-driven zoning and development feedback process.
The Workshop is designed to fill a gap Albany Park has long felt. City planning staff noted that the redevelopment "responds to a continuous need from the community for a larger gathering space." When complete, the space will house artist recording studios, rehearsal rooms, and creative workspaces — along with a transit-accessible concert venue steps from the Kimball Brown Line stop. Plans also call for a musical instrument repair shop, making it a true one-stop destination for musicians and music lovers across the Northwest Side. Notably, the project is being developed with worker-ownership and cooperative ownership structures, cementing its commitment to the local community.
Support has poured in from neighbors and arts organizations alike — including Serendipity Theatre Company (2nd Story), which moved to Albany Park in 2016 and praised the project's potential to amplify the neighborhood's local artist community. The North River Commission has also voiced enthusiastic backing. Keep an eye on northrivercommission.org for updates as The Workshop takes shape on Lawrence Avenue!
