Wings Over the Lagoon: Humboldt Park Is Becoming One of Chicago's Hottest Birding Destinations This Spring
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Humboldt Park ·
Humboldt Park's lagoon and green spaces are earning a new kind of fan base this spring — and they carry binoculars. On May 3, the Chicago Ornithological Society led 22 birders on a migration-season Sunday Social Bird Walk through the park, guided by COS Vice President Christina Harber and trip co-leader Ryan Pate. The outing turned into a wildlife spectacular: a Baltimore Oriole sang from a treetop near the historic boathouse, a Great Blue Heron waded just feet from the path, and a Caspian Tern dove dramatically into the lagoon for a small fish. A nesting pair of Canada Geese — with eggs spotted the day before — greeted the group right at the meeting spot, while a Red-tailed Hawk swooped across 'Grackle Island,' sending protective birds into a flurry of alarm calls.
And the lagoon magic keeps coming. The Water Lantern Festival has officially announced Humboldt Park as its Chicago venue this summer, with the event set for Sunday, July 12, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. at 1301 N. Humboldt Dr. Thousands of glowing, eco-friendly lanterns — every single one collected after the event — will drift across the water at dusk in what organizers describe as 'a shared moment that brings families and friends closer together.'
From birding walks to lantern launches, Humboldt Park's 197-acre natural treasure is proving it's one of Chicago's most vibrant outdoor destinations. Mark your calendar for July 12 and grab tickets at waterlanternfestival.com — and keep an eye on the Chicago Ornithological Society at chicagobirder.org for upcoming walks right in your backyard.
