Pilsen Neighbors Get a Seat at the Table as City Launches Major Industrial Corridor Study

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Pilsen ·

Pilsen's future is up for discussion — and the city wants to hear from you. Chicago's planning and transportation departments have officially launched the Pilsen Industrial Corridor Study, a sweeping look at how the neighborhood's massive industrial zone can be reimagined for the decades ahead. The study was introduced to neighbors at a community meeting on May 6 at Dvorak Park, where city officials shared a preliminary analysis of the corridor's land use and opened the floor to community ideas.

The corridor in question is no small patch of land. Spanning roughly 1,000 acres along the Chicago River between Halsted Street and Western Avenue, the area holds enormous potential for transformation. Neighbors at the meeting voiced a clear desire for more green space and better connectivity — particularly between Pilsen and Bridgeport across the Chicago River. In response, the city indicated it plans to work with the McKinley Park Development Council on the South Branch Connectivity Project to identify potential river crossing points. Officials also floated the idea that commercial and industrial developments could be required to include publicly accessible green space along the riverbank under future planning guidelines.

The city's Department of Planning and Development is continuing to collect community feedback, with an informal presentation planned for the Plan Commission's May 21 meeting. This is Pilsen's moment to shape its own horizon — make your voice heard by staying connected through Pilsen Neighbors Community Council at pilsenneighbors.org.
