$22.5 Million Affordable Housing Development Breaks Ground at 63rd & Western — and West Englewood Is Ready

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Englewood ·

A major new chapter is taking shape at one of West Englewood's most visible intersections. Earlier this spring, local leaders gathered at 6301 S. Western Ave. to celebrate the groundbreaking of a five-story, 44-unit affordable apartment building — a $22.5 million investment that signals a bold new era for the 63rd and Western corridor.

Developed by the Southwest Side Organizing Project (SWOP) and Brinshore Development, the project will deliver 44 one- and two-bedroom apartments alongside 2,500 square feet of commercial space, a fitness room, and a community room with a kitchen — all expected to open by spring 2027. In a nod to neighborhood history, one room in the building will be dedicated to the memory of Officer Ella French. Perhaps most exciting for local hiring advocates: the building will be prefabricated at a Roseland factory using local hires, with 60 percent of construction materials manufactured right here in Chicago.

Carlil Pittman, West Englewood native and GoodKids MadCity founder, called the project a sign of how far the neighborhood has come — describing it as 'what real community investment looks like.' The development sits at what organizers call an 'access point' between West Englewood and Chicago Lawn, promising to animate a corner that neighbors have long hoped to see thrive. As construction rises on Western Avenue this summer, West Englewood's transformation is impossible to ignore. Stay tuned to swopchicago.org and brinshore.com for project updates.
