Washington Park Is Getting a World-Class Science Center — and It's Going to Be a Big Deal for South Side Youth
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Washington Park ·
Washington Park neighbors, a major announcement is putting your community on the map in a whole new way. Scitopia Chicago — a brand-new, hands-on science education center — has officially been announced for development right in the heart of the neighborhood, next to the Garfield Green Line Station near Garfield Boulevard and Prairie Avenue.
Designed with teens and curious minds of all ages in mind, Scitopia will feature a library, laboratories, live animals, dinosaur fossils, and an Imaginarium — all under one roof. The vision is bold: to give students and community members the chance to experience science outside the traditional classroom setting. Paleontologist and explorer Paul Sereno, who unveiled the plans at the University of Chicago Fossil Lab in Washington Park, called it something "that really has never been put under one roof ever before" — and promised it will draw visitors from across the city and beyond. Best of all, the center will offer free admission, making world-class science accessible to every Washington Park resident from day one.
Groundbreaking is currently slated for January 2028, with a target opening of May 2029. It's one more piece of an extraordinary puzzle of investment and possibility coming together in Washington Park. Stay connected with the Washington Park Advisory Council — meeting every third Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. — to follow Scitopia's progress and keep your voice in the neighborhood's exciting future.
