From Fire Hoses to Flat Whites: Rogers Park's Historic Greenleaf Firehouse Is Becoming a Café and Event Venue

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Rogers Park ·

Rogers Park is about to gain one of its most charming — and most storied — new gathering spots in years. The City of Chicago announced on May 28 that a shuttered, 111-year-old firehouse at 1721-23 W. Greenleaf Ave. will be reborn as a community café and event venue, giving new life to a beloved neighborhood landmark that has sat dormant for years.

The $3 million project, awarded to developer Ryan Cummings, will transform the City-owned structure into a 2,000-square-foot coffee house with more than 4,000 square feet of event space and offices on the second level — all while preserving the building's historic character. Department of Planning and Development Commissioner Ciere Boatright called it "a thoughtful proposal" that will reinforce the firehouse's role as a community anchor while complementing pedestrian activity on nearby Clark Street. The proposed purchase price reflects the building's appraised market value of $350,050, and the project was selected from five competitive responses to an October 2025 RFP prioritizing adaptive reuse of the historic structure.

For Rogers Park neighbors, this is the kind of win that hits differently — a piece of neighborhood history rescued, repurposed, and handed back to the community in the best possible way. A walkable café steps from Clark Street? An event space rooted in a century-old building? That's the Rogers Park magic in action. Stay tuned to the City's Department of Planning and Development for updates on timelines, and start dreaming about your first cup of coffee in a genuine piece of Far North Side history.
