Your Street, Your Say: Moving Archer Forward Heads Toward a Historic Vote This Summer

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Archer Heights ·

A sweeping city plan to reshape Archer Avenue — the main artery running through the heart of Archer Heights — is entering its final stretch, and neighbors still have time to make their voices heard before it goes to a City Council vote.

The Chicago Department of Planning and Development's Moving Archer Forward initiative has been building momentum since its first public meeting in Archer Heights last fall. The plan tackles big-picture priorities including pedestrian safety, new housing options, open space, economic development, and making Archer Avenue a true community destination — not just a through-street. A second public meeting this past March drew a lively crowd to the McKinley Park Fieldhouse, where residents weighed in on everything from protected bike lanes and vacant lot redevelopment to small business support and better CTA Orange Line connections. Notably, a cafe or local coffee shop topped the list of businesses neighbors most want to see on the corridor. The city is now targeting a third public meeting to present a drafted plan, with a goal of seeking City Council adoption this summer.

For Archer Heights residents, this is a rare window to shape the block-by-block future of the neighborhood's most important street — from Halsted all the way to Cicero. Sign up for email updates from the Department of Planning and Development and track the latest at chicago.gov/Archer2025.
