Paws, Play & Poolside: Portage Park's New Dog Area & ADA Playground Are Open for Summer

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Portage Park ·

Summer is officially calling Portage Park neighbors outside — and the Chicago Park District has been quietly rolling out some exciting upgrades to make the season even sweeter. The beloved 38-acre neighborhood anchor has debuted two new additions that are already turning heads: a brand-new soft-surface ADA accessible playground and a new dog friends area, giving families and four-legged residents alike a fresh reason to spend their days at Central and Irving Park Road.

The new ADA playground means more Portage Park kids — including those with mobility challenges — can join in on the fun, while the dedicated dog area carves out a safe, social space for the neighborhood's ever-growing pup community. It's the kind of thoughtful, inclusive investment that signals the park isn't just maintaining its legacy — it's building on it. And speaking of legacy: Portage Park's Olympic-size pool, which famously hosted the 1972 U.S. Olympic swimming trials where Mark Spitz set world records, is gearing up for another spectacular summer season, complete with misting sprays, a water slide, diving boards, and an interactive water play area.

With summer programming — from tennis to aquatics — kicking off the week of June 15, there's no better time to explore everything your neighborhood park has to offer. Head to chicagoparkdistrict.com to browse programs and register before spots fill up. And if you've already checked out the new dog area or playground, share your photos with the Socialhood community — we want to see Portage Park's summer in full swing!
