Uptown Just Got Chicago's Rarest Cuisine: Garuda Street Food Brings Authentic Indonesian Flavors to Argyle Street
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Uptown ·
Uptown's already-legendary Argyle Street dining corridor just got a remarkable new addition — and it's one that the entire city has been waiting for. Garuda Street Food has officially opened its doors at 1046 W. Argyle, stepping into the former Gusto's space and serving up something genuinely rare: authentic Indonesian street food. According to Uptown Update, which has been following the opening closely, Garuda is now one of only two Indonesian restaurants in all of Chicago, joining Rendang Republic (which opened in 2025) to represent the flavors of the Indonesian archipelago in the city.
The owner put it simply: "We are very excited to bring Garuda to the Uptown community" — with a focus on authentic Indonesian street food and flavors rooted in tradition. For a neighborhood already celebrated for its pan-Asian dining scene along Argyle (affectionately nicknamed 'Asia on Argyle'), the addition of Indonesian cuisine is a thrilling expansion of the block's already-impressive culinary diversity.
And if you're looking for even more reasons to get outside this weekend, Foster Beach — just steps from Uptown — hosts its beloved Full Moon Jam this summer, a volunteer-run, family-friendly gathering featuring fire performers, drummers, and dancers on the shores of Lake Michigan at sunset. Between Garuda's grand opening and the lakefront festivities nearby, there's never been a better weekend to explore everything Uptown has to offer.
