Washington Park Neighbors Rally Around Youth: Community Listening Session Demands More Spaces, More Opportunities for Teens
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Washington Park ·
Washington Park is showing once again why it's one of Chicago's most engaged and community-driven neighborhoods. On Tuesday, June 3, residents gathered for a powerful listening session hosted by Acclivus — a South Side community health organization — to put a simple, urgent message on the table: young people in this neighborhood need more places to go and more things to do, and the community is ready to make it happen.
The energy in the room was clear and constructive. Neighbors, parents, and young people alike spoke candidly about the need to open up more resources for teens — from park district facilities to after-school programming. "They're saying they want places to go, things to do," one attendee noted, calling on institutions to meet that demand head-on. Organizers from Acclivus emphasized that creating safe, welcoming spaces for youth is a public health priority — and Washington Park residents are ready to lead that charge.
The timing couldn't be more meaningful. With summer officially here, Washington Park's 345-acre green space — one of Chicago's most storied Olmsted-designed parks — is primed to serve as a hub for exactly that kind of youth activity. Organizers say they hope more teens will show up to future listening sessions to make their voices heard. If you want to be part of shaping what youth programming looks like in Washington Park this summer and beyond, stay connected with the Washington Park Advisory Council, which meets every third Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
