After Double Door's Dreams Fade, Uptown's Wilson Theatre Waits for Its Next Chapter
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Uptown ·
Uptown music fans received sobering but important news this spring: the long-anticipated revival of the legendary Double Door at the historic Wilson Theatre, 1050 W. Wilson, has officially been called off — but the neighborhood's live music spirit is far from finished.
Double Door co-owner Sean Mulroney pulled the plug on plans to reopen at the Wilson Theatre after renovation costs skyrocketed more than 200% and financing proved impossible to secure. Despite holding a $5 million TIF grant from the City of Chicago, Mulroney went to nine banks and received the same answer every time. "It's a shame because it's a stunning facility," he told the Chicago Sun-Times, adding that the per-night bookings required just to break even simply weren't sustainable in today's live music landscape. The $5 million grant access eventually expired, and the team worked "down to the wire" exploring alternatives before closing the book on the Wilson location.
For Uptown neighbors, the news stings — but it also reopens the question of what comes next for one of the neighborhood's most architecturally significant spaces. With TimeLine Theatre now anchoring Broadway, Marina's Supper Club and Molino Los Hermanos on the way, and the Argyle Night Market returning this July and August, Uptown's cultural momentum is undeniable. The Wilson Theatre's future is unwritten — and that's a story worth watching closely.
