Good Earth Is Coming to Galewood: A Fifth-Generation Family Greenhouse Is About to Transform a Long-Vacant Harlem Avenue Corner
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Galewood ·
Galewood's Harlem Avenue corridor is about to get a whole lot greener. Good Earth — a fifth-generation, family-owned garden center business with roots stretching back to the South Side in 1928 — has announced plans to open a greenhouse, fresh market, and café at 1933 N. Harlem Ave., the site of a long-shuttered McDonald's that neighbors have watched sit vacant for years. It's the kind of news that makes a neighborhood exhale.
The plans are ambitious and community-minded. Renderings reveal a renovated existing building housing a retail space, a new outdoor garden center, an expanded patio, and a brand-new 3,000-square-foot greenhouse rising beside the building. Inside, shoppers can expect a fresh market stocked with produce and food products sourced from local farmers — a genuine addition to Galewood's retail landscape. The concept mirrors Good Earth's beloved River Forest location at 7900 Madison St., which already draws fans with its garden center, florist, and café under one roof. Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th) summed it up well: "We're taking properties that have been vacant for a long time and just trying to bring the right fit for our ward."
For a corner that residents previously fought to protect from a five-story rental building and a car wash proposal, Good Earth feels like the community got exactly what it asked for.
