Curtain Call: The Historic Portage Theater Is Getting a Second Life — and the Neighborhood Gets a Say
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Portage Park ·
Portage Park's most storied landmark may soon be alive with music, movies, and community again. Chris Bauman of Zenith Music Group has taken over the 106-year-old Portage Theater at 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., and his vision for the space is as ambitious as the building is beautiful. Bauman wants to transform the long-dormant venue into a true community gathering hub — one that hosts everything from concerts and film screenings to indoor markets and high school plays.
Bauman isn't just thinking about reopening day. "The goal when we open Portage again is not just to get it open but to have it ready for the next 100 years," he told Block Club Chicago. He's already begun cleaning the interior, applied for grants, and filed paperwork to establish the Portage Theater Foundation — a nonprofit that, once launched, will bring neighborhood groups directly into the conversation about how the theater should serve the community. After the foundation goes live, Bauman plans to spend three to six months fundraising for the full slate of renovations needed to restore this architectural gem to its former glory.
This is the kind of comeback story Portage Park deserves. A century-old neighborhood treasure, reimagined for the next hundred years — with residents at the center of the plan. Stay tuned for foundation launch announcements, and share your thoughts with the Socialhood community: what would YOU love to see at a restored Portage Theater?
