Bucktown's Newest Table Is a World Tour: The Origin African Fusion Restaurant & Lounge Has Arrived on Armitage
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Bucktown ·
Bucktown's already-buzzing dining scene just got its most culturally adventurous addition yet. The Origin Restaurant and Lounge has opened its doors at 2010 W. Armitage Ave., bringing an African fusion concept to a neighborhood that continues to prove it can absorb bold, boundary-pushing ideas. The space, which took over the former El Rinconcito Sudamerica — a beloved spot that relocated to Belmont Cragin in early 2025 — has been under construction since last spring, with delays in permitting and buildout pushing the grand opening to May 15.
What makes The Origin stand out isn't just the food — it's the format. The restaurant plans to bring in rotating chefs to cook dishes from across the African diaspora, meaning the menu could look entirely different depending on when you walk in. Chefs may stay for a few months or just a week or two while passing through Chicago, keeping things fresh and genuinely unpredictable. Restaurant partner Coco Shelton described the vibe as accessible but elevated — "not so luxury that you can't come in every day after work, but still a nice place to go out and have a dinner date." Weekend hours run until 2 a.m., with a Saturday and Sunday brunch rounding out the schedule.
With The Origin now open and a wave of other new spots taking shape across the neighborhood, Armitage Avenue is quietly becoming one of Bucktown's most exciting dining corridors. Head over to 2010 W. Armitage Ave. and see what's on the menu — it just might be something you've never tasted before.
