Edgewater Honors a Comedy Legend: Sheridan Road Gets a New Name — Bob Newhart Way

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Edgewater ·

Edgewater has a brand-new reason to look up at the street signs. A one-block stretch of Sheridan Road, just south of Thorndale Avenue, has been officially renamed Bob Newhart Way — a heartfelt tribute to the beloved comedian and TV icon who once called the neighborhood home. The late Bob Newhart's family made the trip to Edgewater for the special ceremonial dedication, making it a genuine community moment that bridged generations of fans and neighbors alike.

Newhart, best known for his groundbreaking stand-up and his classic sitcoms, has deep roots in the area, and the street renaming is a fitting way for the neighborhood to cement that legacy in its very geography. For longtime Edgewater residents, walking past that sign will carry a warm flash of recognition — a reminder that one of America's most beloved entertainers grew up right here on the North Side.

While you're soaking up the neighborhood's summer spirit, don't miss the Edgewater Sidewalk Sale coming up soon — a free, community-wide shopping event that brings the best of local businesses right out onto the sidewalk. And if you're looking for a fun mid-week outing, Stewpendous Trivia at Loaves & Witches returns on July 31. Edgewater's calendar is as full as ever — head to edgewater.org to stay in the loop!
