Uptown's Argyle Corridor Just Got Even More Delicious: Chicago's Newest Indonesian Restaurant Opens Its Doors

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Uptown ·

Uptown's legendary Argyle Street dining scene just added an exciting new chapter. Garuda Street Food has officially opened at 1046 W. Argyle — the former Gusto's space — bringing authentic Indonesian street food to a neighborhood already celebrated for its extraordinary pan-Asian culinary diversity. According to Uptown Update, the owners held a soft opening before swinging the doors fully open, with a menu rooted in the flavors of the Indonesian archipelago. The owners say Garuda will offer "something in short supply in Chicago, food from the Indonesian archipelago," with a diverse menu that goes beyond what Indonesian food fans may have encountered before. Garuda joins Rendang Republic — which opened in 2025 — making Uptown home to both of Chicago's Indonesian restaurants. That's a remarkable culinary distinction for a single neighborhood.

And the food news doesn't stop there. Uptown has another marquee arrival on the horizon: Molino Los Hermanos, from Michelin-starred chef Norman Fenton, is set to open in the neighborhood this summer. The dual-concept tortilleria and restaurant will center on heirloom corn and traditional nixtamalization, featuring an in-house molino and open kitchen spotlighting the craft behind masa-based cuisine — a truly one-of-a-kind concept for Chicago's North Side.

From Argyle's sizzling Indonesian street food to a Michelin-pedigree masa kitchen coming soon, Uptown is cementing its reputation as one of Chicago's most exciting food neighborhoods.
