Built in Chicago, For Chicago: West Englewood's 63rd & Western Is Rising — One Prefab Panel at a Time

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Englewood ·

A long-blighted corner in West Englewood is finally getting the transformation it deserves. Back in April, local leaders gathered at 6301 S. Western Ave. to break ground on a landmark $22.5 million, five-story affordable housing development — and the way it's being built is just as exciting as what's going up. The Southwest Side Organizing Project (SWOP) and Brinshore Development are partnering on the project, which will bring 44 one- and two-bedroom apartments to the 63rd and Western intersection, along with 2,500 square feet of commercial space, a fitness room, and a community kitchen. Spring 2027 is the target opening date.

Here's the twist that makes this project stand out: local firm Toro Construction is prefabricating 60 percent of the building right here in Chicago — at a specialized factory in Roseland that prioritizes local hires. That means West Englewood neighbors aren't just gaining a home — they're helping build it. Alderman Stephanie Coleman (16th Ward) called it exactly the kind of investment the neighborhood has been waiting for, saying the corner will become 'a vital, active entryway' to both West Englewood and Chicago Lawn. GoodKids MadCity founder Carlil Pittman, a West Englewood native, called the project 'a transformation rooted in shared dignity, stability, racial equity, and generational wealth.'

As steel meets sky at 63rd and Western this summer, West Englewood's future is literally taking shape. Follow progress on the project and explore other community-building opportunities at swopchicago.org and ragenglewood.org.
