Washington Park Is Your Summer HQ: Day Camp, Girls Sports, and the Bud Billiken Parade Are All Headed Your Way
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Washington Park ·
Washington Park neighbors, your park is pulling double duty this summer — serving as a full-on community campus for kids and families through early August, with one of Chicago's most beloved annual traditions just around the corner.
The Chicago Park District's six-week summer day camp is in full swing at Washington Park right through August 9, giving neighborhood youth a structured, fun-filled season packed with activities. Running alongside it is the Girls P.L.A.Y. Sports Camp, offering young women in the community dedicated athletic programming right here on the South Side. With the park's 345-acre footprint — complete with an aquatic center, basketball and tennis courts, baseball, soccer, and softball fields — there's truly no better backdrop for a summer of growth, fitness, and friendship. Registration opened in April, but it's not too late to check availability at the Chicago Park District's website.
And mark your calendars for August 8: the iconic Bud Billiken Parade — one of the largest African American parades in the United States — makes its legendary march from 39th and MLK Drive down to Washington Park, bringing community activities and live entertainment straight to the neighborhood's doorstep. It's a back-to-school celebration unlike any other, and Washington Park is at the heart of it. Stay connected with the Washington Park Advisory Council (every third Wednesday, 7 p.m.) to make the most of everything this incredible neighborhood has to offer.
