Hyde Park's Weekend Is Packed: The Silver Room Block Party Is Back, Oscar Brown Jr. Gets His Flowers & Your Neighborhood Has Plans for You

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Hyde Park ·

Hyde Park neighbors, this weekend is serving up a full plate — and two of the stories behind it are worth knowing.

First, a big one: after three years away, the Silver Room Block Party is making its return. According to the Hyde Park Herald, Silver Room founder Eric Williams is bringing the beloved event back with a brand-new business model designed to keep it alive for years to come. It's the kind of resilient, community-rooted comeback that only Hyde Park could pull off — so mark your calendars and show up for one of the neighborhood's most iconic summer traditions.

Meanwhile, the neighborhood is also celebrating a cultural legend: the Hyde Park Herald reports that family, friends and admirers of Oscar Brown Jr. gathered at Harper Court under sunny skies to honor the poet, activist and artist during what would have been his 100th birthday year — a moving, joyful tribute to one of Hyde Park's most beloved creative giants.

And this Saturday, July 18, Miyagi Records (307 E. Garfield Blvd.) keeps the good vibes going with Selector Saturdays — a free community DJ series featuring Chicago DJ T Busy from 3 to 5 p.m. Also on Saturday, University of Illinois environmental science student Akosua Haynes is leading a volunteer cleanup at 57th Street Beach (noon to 2 p.m.) as part of the Alliance for the Great Lakes' Adopt-a-Beach program — a perfect way to give back to the lakefront you love.

Hyde Park neighbors, which of these are you most excited about? Tell your community on Socialhood!
