Milwaukee Ave. is undergoing a transformation under new ownership, as Chris Bauman of Zenith Music Group works to restore the historic venue into a vibrant community gathering space. Bauman — who also owns the nearby Patio Theater — paid off over $500,000 in back taxes owed on the property, took over payments for the canopy erected under the damaged marquee, and has already begun cleaning up the theater's storied interior.

The vision for the Portage Theater is as ambitious as it is community-first. Bauman envisions an ever-changing calendar of events — from movie marathons and concerts to high school plays and indoor markets. A Portage Theater Foundation nonprofit is in the works, and once launched, Bauman plans to meet with local neighborhood groups to hear directly from residents about how they want to see the beloved space used. As Bauman put it, the goal is to get the theater "ready for the next 100 years" — honoring its beauty and history while welcoming the events of the next century.
