Summer's Coming to Holstein Park: Bucktown's Beloved 'Country Club' Pool Is Almost Ready to Open

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Bucktown ·

Bucktown's most beloved backyard oasis is almost back. The Holstein Park pool at 2200 N. Oakley Ave. — affectionately nicknamed the "Bucktown Country Club" by regulars — is on track to reopen by late July, according to the Chicago Park District. The pool missed its usual mid-June opening after a state-mandated filter system upgrade triggered delivery delays, leaving neighbors sweltering through back-to-back heat waves without their favorite cool-down spot. But the wait is nearly over.

Friends of Holstein Park president Mike Barry says the community group has been in close contact with the Park District to push for a speedy opening — and has also advocated for extending the pool's season beyond Labor Day to make up for the truncated summer. The Park District has acknowledged the delay, noting that the new filtration project was "a major construction project and beyond typical maintenance" — and that getting it right is worth the wait.

While you count down the days until cannonball season officially begins at Holstein, there's no shortage of other neighborhood action to enjoy. The Origin Restaurant and Lounge, the buzzy new African fusion spot at 2010 W. Armitage Ave., is now open and serving dishes from across the African diaspora — with a rotating chef residency, weekend brunch, and late-night hours on weekends. It's a great summer for Bucktown. Follow Friends of Holstein Park for pool opening updates, and stop by The Origin to kick off the season right.
