Five New Homes Coming to West Town: Mayor Johnson Proposes City Land Sale on Erie Street

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Town ·

West Town is about to get a little more neighborly — literally. Mayor Brandon Johnson proposed a City-owned land sale to City Council this week that would pave the way for five brand-new single-family homes to be built right in the heart of the neighborhood. Walsh Apartments LLC has put forward

.5 million to purchase a .42-acre property at 2341 W. Erie St., with plans to invest a further $5.9 million into the residential construction project. The site was listed through the City's ChiBlockBuilder land sale portal back in fall 2025 with a
.4 million market value, making this a competitive and community-minded bid.

The proposal is a meaningful signal for a neighborhood that has been buzzing with new energy all summer long. While much of West Town's recent momentum has centered on its restaurant and retail corridors, infill residential development like this helps ensure the neighborhood grows in a balanced, sustainable way — welcoming new families and long-term residents to put down roots alongside the exciting new businesses arriving on Chicago and Grand avenues.

If City Council gives the green light, construction on W. Erie St. could bring five new households into the West Town fold — five more families ready to become part of this incredible community. Keep an eye on City Council proceedings, neighbors, and root for this one to cross the finish line!
