Bucktown's Biggest Month Yet: Vienna Beef Plaza Finally Opens and the Arts Fest Returns for Year 39
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Bucktown ·
August is shaping up to be one of Bucktown's biggest months in recent memory — and two long-awaited milestones are leading the charge.
First, the news hot dog lovers have been waiting years to hear: Vienna Beef Plaza at 2501 N. Damen Ave. is finally opening its café and factory store. The $20 million redevelopment of the brand's iconic former Bucktown factory — which sat largely dormant since production moved to Bridgeport in 2015 — is now welcoming the public to its ground floor. Expect local brewery taps, indoor and outdoor seating, a rentable event space, and an interactive build-your-own Chicago-style hot dog experience, all anchored by historical artifacts from the company's 130-plus years in the city. The outdoor plaza, set at the striking wedge where Damen, Elston, and Fullerton converge, will feature more than 80 trees and a garden-style gathering space. It's a homecoming that feels deeply, unmistakably Bucktown.
And mark your calendars for August 29–30: the Bucktown Arts Fest returns to Holstein Park for its 39th year. What began as four artists showing work in a park has grown into a 40,000-person community tradition — free to attend, all-volunteer run, and entirely dedicated to supporting arts education in the neighborhood. Up to 200 juried artists will showcase photography, painting, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, and more, from 11am to 7pm each day. It's the kind of event that reminds you exactly why people fall in love with this neighborhood. Head to bucktownartsest.com for details, and swing by Vienna Beef Plaza to kick off the month right.
