Irving Park's Business Community Is Organizing — And It Could Change the Corridor Forever

Irving Park neighbors, something exciting is quietly taking shape behind the scenes of your favorite local storefronts — and it could supercharge the neighborhood's commercial corridor for years to come. A coalition of 13 area businesses operating under the name Explore Irving Park Chicago (EIPC) is pushing to establish a brand-new Special Service Area (SSA) centered near the intersection of Irving Park Road and North Elston. The effort is being processed through the Pulaski Elston Business Association, which has already submitted a feasibility assessment to the city.
The timing couldn't be better. As a recent deep-dive into the corridor noted, between March and July of this year, three separate community-oriented gathering spaces opened within a ten-minute walk of each other — giving Old Irving Park the daytime infrastructure it has long been missing. Among the coalition's anchor voices is Katherine Duncan, who opened the Irving Park location of Katherine Anne Confections back in 2023 and has been a driving force behind connecting local businesses the way established Chicago corridors like Andersonville have long done for their own merchants.
An SSA would unlock dedicated funding for things like streetscaping, marketing, and neighborhood events — the kind of institutional backbone that transforms a promising corridor into a true destination.
