Pilsen's Worker-Owned Bookstore Has a Stunning New Home — and It's Becoming a Community Hub
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Pilsen ·
Good news for book lovers and community builders in Pilsen: Pilsen Community Books, the neighborhood's beloved worker-owned bookstore, has settled into its spacious new home at 1531 W. 18th St. — and it's quickly becoming one of the most exciting gathering spots on the block. The shop relocated to the new address earlier this year, giving the team room to grow in ways their original location simply couldn't accommodate.
The upgrade is a big deal for the neighborhood. Worker-owner Mandy Medley says the new space allows the shop to expand its selection of Spanish-language books — a meaningful addition for Pilsen's predominantly Latino community. Even more exciting, the new location features a large event space that can host 80 to 100 people, opening the door to book clubs, author talks, and community conversations that the old shop couldn't fit. The bookstore first opened in 2016 and became Chicago's only employee-owned bookstore when new owners took over in 2020 — a distinction that makes supporting it feel extra meaningful.
With an upcoming author event on August 27 already on the calendar at 1531 W. 18th St., there's no better time to (re)discover this Pilsen gem. Stop in during store hours — Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. — browse the shelves, and check their website for the latest programming. This is community-powered retail at its finest.
