100 Years Strong: Irving Park's YMCA Hits a Century — and the Neighborhood Is Celebrating

The Irving Park YMCA has officially marked 100 years of service to Chicago's Northwest Side. Congressman Mike Quigley honored the centennial in late July 2026, recognizing the Y's century of community impact in an official tribute. It is one of the longer-running YMCA branches in the Chicago metro area, and for generations of Irving Park families, it has been the place where kids learned to swim, neighbors found fitness classes, and the community came together regardless of background or income.
The centennial arrives at a moment when Irving Park's communal infrastructure is quietly booming. This summer alone, the neighborhood has seen a record store and coffee shop open across from Independence Park, a new salon-and-café hybrid take root on Elston Avenue, and a coalition of 13 local businesses push toward establishing a formal Special Service Area on the corridor.
