September arrived in Bucktown this week with a genuinely full calendar — and a stretch of fall programming that rewards anyone willing to step outside and explore the neighborhood on foot. From a recurring car-free street event that shuts down one of Chicago's most beloved commercial corridors to a brand-new pizza counter operating under the Western Blue Line, the neighborhood is offering residents more reasons than usual to stay local this autumn.
The headliner for the season is the Meet Me On Milwaukee series, which returns on the last Sunday of each month through October. On those dates — including September 28 and October 25 — Milwaukee Avenue is closed to automobile traffic between the North/Damen intersection and Ashland from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., giving pedestrians, cyclists, and anyone with a stroller the full width of the street to explore. The event is free to attend and runs through the heart of the Wicker Park and Bucktown commercial district, one of Chicago's densest concentrations of independent retailers, coffee shops, and restaurants.

Wicker Park and Bucktown are home to more than 20 vintage, resale, and thrift boutiques, making this corridor what the Chamber calls Chicago's "ultimate shopping mecca for collectors, designers, vintage lovers, and style hunters." The Thrift Riot is a single-day event that concentrates that culture into one organized shopping occasion — the kind of event that draws serious collectors from across the city alongside neighbors who just want to browse on a Saturday afternoon.
