Fall Is Here, and West Pullman Park Is Ready: New Season of Programs Launches This Week at a Neighborhood Institution
By Socialhood News · West Pullman ·
For West Pullman residents looking to plug into something new this fall, the answer may be closer than they think. West Pullman Park — the 16-plus-acre neighborhood anchor on the Far South Side — is launching its full fall programming season this week, with classes and activities beginning Tuesday, September 8, and running through mid-December.
The Chicago Park District's fall slate at West Pullman Park is built for neighbors of all ages and schedules. Among the new offerings: a Tuesday morning fitness class running from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., starting September 22 and continuing through December 8 (with breaks on October 27 and November 24). A companion Tuesday evening session runs from 6:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. on the same schedule — a rare double-session setup that gives both early risers and after-work participants a real option. A Wednesday morning class adds a third weekly time slot, running 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. from September 23 through December 9. Most programs in the broader fall season run from September 8 through December 13.
Online registration for the fall season opened August 4, and in-person registration followed on August 8 — meaning spots may already be filling up. Residents who haven't yet registered should stop by the park directly or visit the Chicago Park District's website at chicagoparkdistrict.com to check availability and sign up. The park is located at 401 W. 123rd Street in West Pullman.
The park itself is a genuine neighborhood gem, and not just for its programming calendar. West Pullman Park encompasses 16.33 acres and features an indoor swimming pool, two gymnasiums, multi-purpose clubrooms, tennis and basketball courts, baseball and softball fields, a playground, and a spray pool. Its natural savanna area — a wooded slope covered with a mature stand of oaks, hickories, and cherries sitting atop an ancient riverbank — is one of Chicago's few remaining native landscapes, a living piece of ecological history hiding in plain sight on the Far South Side.
The park's history runs deep. The West Pullman Park District was established in 1913 to serve a rapidly developing neighborhood then filled with steel mills and the working families — many of them Eastern and Southern European immigrants — who kept those industries running. When 21 independent park commissions were consolidated into the Chicago Park District in 1934, West Pullman Park became part of that unified system, and it has served the neighborhood continuously ever since. Today, with the neighborhood approximately 88.6% Black and defined by a strong culture of mutual investment and community pride, the park remains one of the most democratic spaces on the Far South Side: open to everyone, free or low-cost, and built around the needs of the people who live here.
The fall programming launch arrives at a moment of genuine momentum for West Pullman. With a new Black-owned grocery store in development, a 101-acre industrial site redevelopment in planning, and 20 new Habitat for Humanity townhomes under construction, the neighborhood's civic infrastructure is expanding on multiple fronts. A robust park season — fitness classes, after-school programs, senior club, arts and crafts, and the Park Kids program — is the connective tissue that holds a community together while the bigger projects take shape.
