Vienna Beef Plaza Is Finally Here: Bucktown's Legendary Hot Dog Factory Is Now a Neighborhood Destination

For more than a decade, the hulking building at the corner of Damen, Elston, and Fullerton avenues sat in a state of becoming — first a shuttered factory, then a planned driving range that never materialized, then a years-long construction site that neighbors watched with a mix of curiosity and hope. This fall, the wait is over. Vienna Beef Plaza, the $20 million redevelopment of Chicago's most iconic hot dog company's longtime Bucktown headquarters at 2501 N. Damen Ave., has opened its doors to the public.
The project has been a long time coming. Vienna Beef moved its production operations from Bucktown to a facility in Bridgeport back in 2015, and the sprawling 150,000-square-foot former factory has been in various stages of reinvention ever since. A planned Drive Shack driving range fell through during the pandemic, and the company pivoted to something more ambitious: a full redevelopment of the property into what it's calling Vienna Beef Plaza — a campus that combines corporate offices, a flagship restaurant, a factory store, a rentable event space, and an outdoor garden plaza at the wedge where Bucktown, Wicker Park, and Logan Square converge.
The corporate side of the project has been up and running for some time — 50 Vienna Beef employees relocated to second-floor offices there last year. But what neighbors have been waiting for is the public-facing ground floor, and that's what's now open. The restaurant draws on the company's 130-plus-year Chicago history, featuring local brewery taps, indoor and outdoor seating, and historical artifacts from the company's archive. The factory store — the spiritual successor to the original factory store that closed in 2020 — is stocked with Vienna Beef products, branded merchandise, and Chicago food staples. The outdoor plaza, which includes more than 80 trees and a garden-style gathering space, fills the wedge-shaped lot at one of the neighborhood's most dramatic intersections.
One of the most distinctive elements of the restaurant experience is what Vienna Beef describes as an interactive hot dog build — a guided, staff-led experience where guests can construct their own Chicago-style dog with all the classic toppings. It's a concept that leans into the company's identity as a keeper of Chicago culinary tradition, and for a neighborhood that prides itself on authenticity, it reads as exactly the right move for this location and this operator.
The opening caps a remarkable run of destination-level arrivals along this stretch of Bucktown's commercial core. Just to the south at 1744 N. Western Ave., Wolf & Company — which opened in June 2025 as the only private business in Chicago with direct physical access to The 606 Bloomingdale Trail — has become one of the neighborhood's most-discussed spots. The building has a ramp off the trail that deposits visitors directly at the second-floor café level, making it a natural hub for cyclists, runners, and trail walkers. Executive Chef Graham Akroyd leads the kitchen, and the bar program is overseen by Clare Andrejek and Woody Tauke, with a savory-forward cocktail list. Wolf & Company runs from a 7 a.m. coffee service through a grab-and-go deli counter at lunch to a full dinner and drinks program running until 11 p.m. — covering the full arc of a trail day under one roof. Early 2026 reviews on OpenTable had already flagged the burger as one of the best in Chicago, and the dog-friendly 606 patio runs all day at full service.
Together, Vienna Beef Plaza and Wolf & Company represent something Bucktown hasn't always had along its Damen-Elston-Western spine: two anchor destinations built not around a trend or a concept, but around the neighborhood's own geography and history. One is physically embedded in The 606. The other is rising from a factory that has anchored the same Damen Avenue block for generations. Both are bets on Bucktown itself.
