Portage Park is closing out September with a pair of genuinely good-news stories — one about the neighborhood's most recognizable stone gateway finally getting the care it deserves, and another about a first-of-its-kind restaurant that's already drawing curious diners to North Central Avenue.
First, the arch. If you've walked or driven into Portage Park via Irving Park Road and Central Avenue, you know the decorative stone archway that marks the park's main entrance — a structure that has welcomed visitors for nearly a century. Back in February, a driver crashed into the arch while turning left onto Central Avenue, leaving the entry with what Chicago Park District Spokesperson Irene Tostado described to Block Club Chicago as "limited masonry damage." For months, neighbors watched and waited. Now, at last, the repair work has begun. According to Block Club Chicago's September 23 report, the Park District began collecting mortar samples at the arch earlier this month — the first technical step toward a proper restoration. Construction fencing has since been installed around the arch, and the district is currently drawing up a repair mockup. Tostado confirmed that repairs are expected to be completed before the end of the year.
The arch's history makes the repair all the more meaningful. The structure was added to the 38-acre park in the 1930s, after the property joined the Chicago Park District — giving it nearly 90 years of standing watch at the corner of Irving Park Road and Central Avenue. For a neighborhood that takes its public spaces seriously, seeing the Park District move quickly on the restoration is a reassuring sign that this piece of communal history won't be left to deteriorate. The timeline — completed by year's end — means the arch should be whole again well before winter sets in.
A few blocks away, on North Central Avenue, a very different kind of arrival has been drawing its own buzz. Fork and Coin, a new pub and supper club at 3938 N. Central Ave., held its grand opening at the start of August and has been building a following ever since. Chef and co-owner Drake Mandrell — a Culinary Institute of America graduate who spent years helping open restaurants in New York and the Hamptons before returning to Chicago — describes Fork and Coin as a sort of "American Izakaya" inspired by Japanese taverns. The concept takes the relaxed, convivial spirit of a Japanese pub and layers it with elevated bar food, giving Portage Park something it didn't have before.
Mandrell's path to Central Avenue is one of those only-in-Chicago stories. After teaching cooking classes and hosting food pop-ups at beaches, parks, and breweries across the city, he connected with Chicago's Bitcoin community — accepting the cryptocurrency at his pop-ups — and eventually met a group of bitcoin-savvy investors who helped him open Fork and Coin. That backstory even shaped the building: the floor above the restaurant is now a co-working space and home to the Chicago Bitcoin Collective, a social club for bitcoin enthusiasts, though Fork and Coin itself operates independently. The restaurant sits directly across the street from Portage Park's nature garden, pool, and senior center, putting it squarely in the daily flow of the neighborhood.
Taken together, these two developments capture something true about what makes Portage Park tick right now. A 1930s stone arch being carefully restored to its original form. A first-of-its-kind pub-meets-izakaya drawing on a chef's years of pop-up experience and an unlikely community of food lovers and crypto investors. Both are, in their own way, about people investing in this neighborhood — with public dollars, private capital, and personal commitment.
