The inaugural Armitage County Fair takes over Armitage Avenue between California Avenue and Humboldt Boulevard this Saturday and Sunday — and the timing couldn't be more fitting. After nearly a year and a half of water-pipe construction that disrupted businesses and foot traffic along the corridor, the street is finally going car-free for a two-day celebration built around the best of the block and the neighborhood that surrounds it.
The fair runs noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, and noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday, September 28. The lineup leans into a county-fair sensibility with a distinctly Chicago spin: 16 live bands, a petting zoo, and a giardiniera-eating competition headline the weekend, alongside one of the more inventive contest ideas to hit the Northwest Side in recent memory — a JB Pritzker lookalike contest, for babies. Whether that last item draws the biggest crowd or the most laughs remains to be seen, but it sets the tone for an event that is clearly not taking itself too seriously.
The Armitage County Fair was approved by the Logan Square Chamber of Commerce in May 2026, which means organizers had roughly three months to pull the whole thing together — a remarkably short runway for an event of this scale. The person who originally dreamed it up is Pete Ternes, the chamber's treasurer, who shepherded the idea from concept to confirmed lineup in a single summer. The fair is also functioning as a fundraiser for the chamber itself, and Ternes is asking attendees to contribute $10 to support this year's event and help establish the fair as an annual tradition going forward.
For the businesses along Armitage Avenue, the fair represents more than a weekend of foot traffic. The stretch between California and Humboldt has dealt with the disruptions of extended construction for well over a year — the kind of protracted infrastructure work that can quietly hollow out a commercial corridor even when the underlying businesses are strong. Closing the street to cars and filling it with bands, animals, and a crowd of neighbors is both a signal that the construction chapter is behind them and an invitation for the rest of the city to rediscover what's been there all along.
The fair also fits neatly into a broader pattern of community-driven programming that the Logan Square Chamber of Commerce has been building across the neighborhood this fall. The chamber's September 16 update highlighted a packed calendar of upcoming events — including a pumpkin carving party at Federales on October 15 and the Bloomingdale Trail Run on the same day as the fair's opening — while noting that six outdoor Farmers Market dates remain before the indoor season kicks off on Small Business Saturday, November 28, at the Avondale Collective in the Hairpin Arts Center. The chamber also thanked residents for supporting more than 2,000 local businesses along Milwaukee, Fullerton, and Armitage avenues, calling the neighborhood's local economy "thriving."
That economic energy has been building for a while. Logan Square was named one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world by Time Out in 2024, and the Logan Square Farmers Market has now won "Best Farmers Market" in Chicago from the Chicago Reader six consecutive times. The Armitage County Fair arrives in that context — not as a one-off novelty, but as a new addition to a neighborhood that has clearly figured out how to celebrate itself.
