Loop Arts Fest, a Brand-New Art Fair, and Open House Chicago: Your October in the Loop Starts Right Now
By Socialhood News · The Loop ·
Loop neighbors, if you needed a reason to clear your October calendar — or at least the next three weekends of it — the neighborhood just handed you several. October 2026 is arriving with a stacked lineup of events, debuts, and cultural moments that make a strong case for the Loop as the most active square mile in Chicago this fall. Here is what is happening, when, and why it matters.
Start with this coming weekend. Sunday, October 5 brings the final edition of Sundays on State for 2026 — the Chicago Loop Alliance's beloved free block party that closes State Street to vehicles between Randolph and Jackson from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This is the second and last Sundays on State of the fall season, following the September 7 edition, and it marks the end of a chapter: the Chicago Loop Alliance has announced that the series is being retired in favor of a new annual event. If you have not made it out yet this year, October 5 is your last chance to experience the format that has welcomed over one million people to State Street since the series launched.
Two days later, on October 7, THE MART at 222 Merchandise Mart Plaza becomes the center of Chicago's visual art world for four days — and it does so with a genuine debut. The Chicago Art Fair makes its very first appearance at THE MART, running October 7 through October 10, bringing together artists, galleries, collectors, and art enthusiasts for four days of contemporary and modern art. Visitors can explore a curated selection of artwork from leading galleries, discover special projects, and find new artists and works to add to their collections. Running concurrently in the same building is Spectrum Chicago, a separate contemporary art fair spotlighting original works by emerging and established independent artists from across the country and around the world — giving THE MART an unusually rich four-day concentration of visual art that has few precedents in recent Loop history. Attendees can discover and collect artwork, connect directly with artists, and experience a diverse range of creative perspectives in an accessible setting. For Loop residents who make the short walk to THE MART this coming week, the combination of the Chicago Art Fair's debut and Spectrum Chicago's full roster means encountering more living artists in a single building than most cities offer in a season.
Then comes October 17 — a date worth circling twice. Loop Arts Fest, the Chicago Loop Alliance's brand-new replacement for Sundays on State, takes over State Street between Jackson Boulevard and Madison Street for a free, daylong street festival celebrating the arts and culture of downtown Chicago. The street closes to vehicular traffic as artists, performers, cultural organizations, and local businesses come together for a celebration of the Loop's vibrant creative community. The festival features on-street activations alongside additional arts and cultural programming happening throughout the Loop — and it arrives as the formal expression of the new Loop Arts District, backed by nearly 90 arts organizations. This is the first-ever Loop Arts Fest, which means October 17 is both a neighborhood party and a genuine inaugural moment.
On the very same weekend, October 17 and 18, Open House Chicago — the Chicago Architecture Center's annual celebration of architecture, design, and the city's built environment — gives visitors free access to more than 200 sites across Chicago, including many locations right here in the Loop. For neighbors who have lived in the neighborhood for years without ever stepping inside some of its most architecturally significant buildings, Open House Chicago weekend is the annual exception that makes those doors open. It is a fitting pairing with Loop Arts Fest: one day to celebrate the neighborhood's living culture, one weekend to explore the physical structures that make it one of the most architecturally dense places in the country.
And while all of this is happening at street level, a quieter but deeply meaningful story is unfolding a few floors up. The Pittsfield Building, one of Chicago's most iconic skyscrapers and a Loop landmark, is actively being brought back to life — with Tom Liravongsa, known publicly as The Skyscraper Guy, involved in helping restore the building while sharing the architectural stories that keep the city's history alive. The Pittsfield is converting from medical offices to modern living, adding another chapter to the Loop's ongoing transformation from a daytime business district into a full residential neighborhood.
October in the Loop is not a single event — it is an accumulation of opening days, debut fairs, block parties, and unlocked doors that, taken together, describe a neighborhood operating at genuine cultural full capacity. The Chicago Art Fair's first appearance at THE MART runs October 7–10. Loop Arts Fest and Open House Chicago both land the weekend of October 17–18. And it all starts this Sunday, October 5, with the final Sundays on State at 11 a.m. on State Street. Which part of this month are you most excited about? Tell your neighbors on Socialhood — and if you make it to THE MART this week, let us know what you find.
