Palmer Square Park Is Lighting Up October With a Free Community Bonfire Night

By Socialhood News · Palmer Square ·

As the leaves turn on Kedzie Boulevard and the evening air takes on its first real October bite, Palmer Square Park is giving neighbors something to gather around — literally. The Chicago Park District has announced a free community bonfire at Palmer Square Park on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at 2200 N. Kedzie Ave. Admission is $0, it's open to all ages, and no registration is required.

The event is part of the Chicago Park District's Nature Oasis Community Bonfire Series, a citywide program designed to draw residents back into their parks after sundown and connect them with the natural world in a season when most people have already retreated indoors. The concept is simple and unhurried: spend an evening in the park by firelight, meet your neighbors, and learn something about the local wildlife sharing this green space with you through the colder months.

For those who want to make the most of it, the Park District is encouraging attendees to arrive within the first 15 minutes of the event for a brief lesson on campfire building — a small but genuinely useful skill that fits naturally into the park's long tradition of hands-on environmental stewardship. The District will provide roasting sticks, and while marshmallows aren't on the official supply list, guests are warmly welcome to bring their own.

The timing couldn't be more fitting for this particular park. Palmer Square Park — the 7.69-acre green space at 2200 N. Kedzie that anchors the western edge of the neighborhood — earned its Level I arboretum accreditation from the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program in September 2025, making it the first Chicago Park District location ever designated as an accredited arboretum through ArbNet, a program administered by The Morton Arboretum. That designation reflects over 45 years of grassroots tree stewardship: the park's canopy now spans 28 species across nearly eight acres, including native hackberry, catalpa, and serviceberry, as well as more than 50 hybrid elms originally provided by noted dendrologist Dr. George Ware of the Morton Arboretum, many of which still stand today.

Gathering around a bonfire beneath that canopy on an October evening is, in other words, more than just a seasonal activity. It's a chance to experience firsthand what all that decades-long community effort has built — a living, breathing urban forest that happens to be one of the most carefully documented tree collections in the city.

The bonfire event is free and open to all ages. Palmer Square Park is located at 2200 N. Kedzie Ave., Chicago, IL 60647, accessible via the Western Brown Line 'L' station. The event runs from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28. Show up early for the campfire-building lesson, bring your own marshmallows, and meet the neighbors — the park has been giving this community reasons to gather all year long.
