South Loop Gets Its Own Museum of Memory: The Chicago Brand Museum on S. Michigan Is a Love Letter to American Consumer Culture

By Socialhood News · South Loop ·

South Loop neighbors, a new kind of cultural destination has quietly taken root on your stretch of S. Michigan Avenue — and it might be the most unexpectedly moving museum experience in the city right now.

The Chicago Brand Museum opened earlier this fall at 2412 S. Michigan Ave., in the Motor Row corridor just south of Cermak Road. From the outside, as Block Club Chicago's Jamie Nesbitt Golden noted in an October 2 feature, the building looks entirely unremarkable. Step inside, and you're transported somewhere else entirely. The two-story space is part time capsule and part love letter to the brands that shaped American life — with thousands of vintage labels, familiar products, and forgotten designs on display that have a way of sparking involuntary memories in almost every visitor who walks through.

The museum is the creation of husband-and-wife team Fred Richards and Elisabeth Emory, both veterans of the advertising and branding world who met on the job as mutual clients of Mars/Wrigley. Richards, who came to Chicago from London 31 years ago, is the collector of the two, amassing objects from travels across the globe over the course of their relationship. Together, the pair have spent 16 years building what has grown into a collection of more than 40,000 objects — and they are now turning that private passion into a public museum, which they run alongside a private branding and design firm.

"We had Mars/Wrigley as mutual clients, and we were working with two different agencies at the time on different parts of their business," Emory told Block Club. "So we worked across a lot of their gum and confections brands over the years, met and hit it off and just kind of never looked back." The personal story behind the collection gives the museum an intimacy that larger institutions rarely achieve — every object on the shelves is there because someone actually loved it enough to save it.

For South Loop residents, the address matters as much as the concept. The 2412 S. Michigan Ave. location places the Chicago Brand Museum squarely in the Motor Row historic district, one of the neighborhood's most architecturally rich corridors and one that has been gaining new cultural gravity in recent years. It sits within easy walking or biking distance of the residential towers along S. Michigan, S. Indiana, and S. Wabash, and is accessible via the CTA's #3 King Drive and #4 Cottage Grove bus routes. The museum is not a satellite of something that started elsewhere — it was built here, by people whose professional lives are rooted in Chicago's creative and commercial industries.

The timing of the museum's public launch also coincides with a meaningful improvement for the S. Michigan corridor itself. On October 1, city, state, and regional transportation officials announced a new dedicated bus lane running along the northbound side of Michigan Avenue from Roosevelt Road all the way to Wacker Drive — a 1.5-mile stretch that passes directly in front of the museum's neighborhood. Officials said the dedicated lane will shorten travel times while having less effect on vehicle traffic than many drivers expect, making the Cultural Mile stretch of Michigan Avenue — and its new neighbor at 2412 — more accessible than ever for riders coming from all directions.

And if you're looking for a reason to make a full South Loop day of it, there's news for sports and entertainment fans as well. Block Club Chicago reported on October 16 that the Savannah Bananas — the viral baseball entertainment phenomenon that has sold out venues across the country — are coming to Soldier Field next year. Tickets are available now, giving South Loop neighbors with Soldier Field steps from their front door a chance to get ahead of what will almost certainly be a fast-selling event.

The Chicago Brand Museum is the kind of addition that reflects what the South Loop has been slowly becoming: a neighborhood whose cultural life is catching up to its residential density and its proximity to the lakefront. A world-class collection of American brand history, built by two advertising professionals who fell in love over gum brands and spent a decade and a half turning their obsession into something the whole city can now walk into — at a Michigan Avenue address, in a neighborhood full of people who will recognize almost everything on the shelves.

South Loop neighbors: have you made it to the Chicago Brand Museum at 2412 S. Michigan yet? What brand or product from the collection hit closest to home? And are you already eyeing Savannah Bananas tickets for Soldier Field? Drop your thoughts on Socialhood — this is exactly the kind of neighborhood discovery that's worth sharing with the people who live closest to it.
