Take Flight This November: The Chicago Ornithological Society Is Bringing a Free Bird Walk to Humboldt Park
By Socialhood News · Humboldt Park ·
November in Humboldt Park is quieter than the summer festivals and restaurant openings that defined the neighborhood's fall — but that doesn't mean there's nothing going on. This month, one of the most accessible and low-key community events of the year is landing right at the park's historic boathouse, and it's free for anyone who wants to show up.
The Chicago Ornithological Society is hosting a Humboldt Park Sunday Social Bird Walk on Sunday, November 8, running from 10 a.m. to noon. The meeting point is the Humboldt Park Boathouse at 1301 N. Humboldt Drive — the same 1907 Prairie School landmark on the park's lagoon that the Chicago Park District recently approved for a new cafe. The walk itself covers a roughly 1.5-mile loop that sticks to flat paved and gravel paths, making it accessible to participants of all physical abilities.
What makes this particular outing worth noting is how deliberately welcoming it is designed to be. The Chicago Ornithological Society has structured the walk as a community birding experience rather than a guided lecture — meaning participants at every skill level, including people who have never picked up a pair of binoculars before, are not just tolerated but actively encouraged to come. There is no registration cap on the walk, so group size can be large. Leaders for the November 8 outing include Chris Holden, Christina Harber, and Anney Grish. The society describes it as a chance to explore the park's urban wildlife corridor during the migratory season — a window when Humboldt Park's lagoon and tree canopy become temporary habitat for birds moving through the city on their way south.
For residents who have mostly experienced the park through its summer festivals, sports fields, or weekend picnics, the bird walk offers a genuinely different way to inhabit a place they already know. The 207-acre park has long functioned as a green oasis in the middle of the West Side's urban grid — and November migration, when species not typically visible in Chicago pass through on their way through the flyway, is one of the better times of year to see it doing what green spaces do best. Free parking is available at both the boathouse and the fieldhouse lots, and the park is accessible by public transit on the 70, 72, and 94 bus routes.
The bird walk isn't the only reason to be active in and around Humboldt Park this first weekend of November. On Saturday, November 7, the park is also hosting Go Run Chicago — a community running event listed on the Chicago Park District's events calendar beginning at 9 a.m. Taken together, the two weekend events reflect the ongoing programming work the Park District and community partners have been doing to keep Humboldt Park activated well into the colder months, not just during the summer peak.
For the Sunday Social Bird Walk on November 8, no registration is required — just show up at the Humboldt Park Boathouse, 1301 N. Humboldt Drive, by 10 a.m. The walk is free, family-friendly, and open to all experience levels. For Go Run Chicago on Saturday, November 7, head to Humboldt Park at 9 a.m. Both events are a good reminder that one of the neighborhood's best assets — the park itself — is worth visiting in every season.
