West Loop This Weekend: A Holiday Tree Farm Takes Over, a New Live-Fire Steakhouse Is Coming, and a Beloved Bookstore Says Goodbye

By Socialhood News · West Loop ·

West Loop neighbors, this first weekend of November is a full one — a pop-up holiday destination is transforming a neighborhood warehouse right now, a beloved nonprofit bookstore is ringing up its final sales on Lake Street, an iconic Chicago hot dog chain just announced a new outpost at Ogilvie Transportation Center, and one of the city's most respected chefs has revealed plans for a live-fire steakhouse on Randolph Street that will turn heads well into 2027.

The most festive news of the week: Lands' End has turned a West Loop warehouse into an immersive holiday experience called The Holiday Tree Farm, open to the public Friday through Sunday, November 6–8, 2026. The free pop-up transforms the space into a holiday destination complete with festive experiences, special programming, and exclusive brand partnerships — all built around the kind of seasonal traditions that the retailer has anchored its identity on for decades. Lands' End is showcasing its signature winter outerwear, festive family pajamas, holiday home décor, and more, with everything shoppable on-site and at LandsEnd.com. It's a rare moment when a national brand chooses the West Loop as the stage for a flagship seasonal activation, and for neighbors looking for a low-key Saturday outing that kicks off the holiday spirit early, today is one of the last chances to walk through the doors.

On a more bittersweet note, Open Books — the nonprofit bookstore that has anchored the corner of 651 W. Lake St. near Desplaines Street since 2015 — is closing its West Loop location today, Sunday, November 8, its final day. The organization cited a decline in foot traffic and the rising cost of operating in the neighborhood; ongoing CTA construction and the Lake Street closure further hurt business, according to the nonprofit. Through its last day, the store is selling all books at 50% off, with hours running 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. After Sunday, a small, curated selection of titles from the West Loop store will migrate to Open Books' only remaining location, Open Books Pilsen at 905 W. 19th St. near Peoria Street. The West Loop store's roots go back even further than 2015 — the nonprofit first opened in River North in 2009, later moved to the West Loop, and also operated a Logan Square location that closed in March of this year. Open Books uses its bookstore revenue to fund literacy programs across Chicago, so today's closing-day sale is both a chance to stock up on discounted reads and a final act of community support for an organization that has served the city for nearly two decades.

While one chapter closes on Lake Street, Randolph Street is about to get a significant new one. Chef John Manion — known in Chicago for his live-fire cooking style — announced this week that he is bringing a new restaurant called Palomino to 565 W. Randolph St., the space formerly occupied by Proxi. Palomino will combine Manion's signature live-fire approach with the flavors and techniques of the American South and West, drawing particular inspiration from Texas, Oklahoma, California, and the Gulf Coast. The restaurant will also feature a raw bar rooted in Manion's childhood visits to Florida seafood shacks and his later experiences eating in Houston and New Orleans. Construction is expected to wrap up around mid-December, with an opening targeted between mid-January and early March. For a street that has built its reputation on bold, chef-driven concepts, Palomino adds a genuinely distinct voice — one rooted in regional American cooking traditions that remain underrepresented on Randolph's otherwise globe-spanning roster.

And for neighbors who commute in and out of the neighborhood via Metra, there's one more piece of news worth flagging: Chicago's Dog House, the city's beloved hot dog institution, is set to open a third location inside Ogilvie Transportation Center at 500 W. Madison Street, targeting a December 1 opening date. Owner Aaron Wolfson, who has run the concept since 2009, recently secured a new 1,800-square-foot space at the transit hub on the east edge of West Loop, where the new outpost will join existing dining concepts including POLOMBIA, Jamba, Soul & Smoke, and Sushi Box. The existing Dog House locations operate in Lincoln Park at 816 W. Fullerton Avenue and on the Magnificent Mile at 520 N. Michigan Avenue. For the thousands of commuters who pass through Ogilvie daily, a proper Chicago dog just became a lot more accessible.

Taken together, this weekend captures a neighborhood in characteristically full motion: a holiday pop-up inviting families in, a community institution closing its doors after more than a decade of service, a celebrated chef staking out his next chapter on Restaurant Row, and a Chicago classic planting its flag at the neighborhood's transit gateway. The West Loop rarely sits still — and this first Saturday of November is proof of that.
