Thrive Englewood: Historic Housing Development Welcomes First Residents to West Englewood

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Englewood ·

A significant milestone for West Englewood was celebrated last month as local officials gathered for a welcome home ceremony at Thrive Englewood. Located at 6249 S. Sangamon St., this six-story building features 62 apartments, including 27 one-bedroom units, 30 two-bedroom units, and five three-bedroom units. Over 80 percent of the apartments are affordable for families earning up to 60 percent of the area's median income, with two live/work lofts and a commercial retail space on the ground floor.

This development marks a historic moment as the first new family housing development built in Englewood in over 50 years. Located steps from the Ashland/63rd Street Green Line station, Thrive Englewood represents "a new era in Englewood" according to Mayor Brandon Johnson, who described the project as "a testament to our belief in housing as a human right" and the city's commitment to investing in communities on the South and West sides.

The 63rd Street corridor continues to see revitalization with several other developments, including the Englewood Family Homes facility and the conversion of the former Charles Warrington Earle School into affordable housing. Community engagement continues with upcoming events hosted by the Resident Association of Greater Englewood (R.A.G.E.), including a New Member Orientation on October 11 and the 'So Fresh' Anniversary Bash on November 15 at the Zhou B Art Center. Residents interested in supporting local revitalization are encouraged to attend these events.
