Wicker Park Goes Car-Free: 'Meet Me On Milwaukee' Returns This Sunday
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Wicker Park ·
The popular 'Meet Me On Milwaukee' event returns to Wicker Park this Sunday, October 26, closing Milwaukee Avenue to cars from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The innovative program, which began in August, transforms the busy thoroughfare between the North/Damen intersection and Ashland Avenue into a pedestrian paradise.
During previous events, neighbors and visitors flocked to the area to shop, eat, and enjoy the novelty of strolling down the middle of Milwaukee Avenue without worrying about traffic. Local business owner Amanda Kezios of Mojo Spa noted, "This is the kind of thing that creates community. So many people live in this neighborhood and say, 'I've lived here for years and I never came in.'" The event creates an opportunity for residents to discover local businesses they might have overlooked.
Expect sidewalk sales from local merchants and a welcoming environment for families with young children and individuals with disabilities. The Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce collaborated with Alderman Daniel La Spata's office to organize the event, which aims to boost foot traffic for local businesses during traditionally slower periods at month's end. Mark your calendar and join your neighbors this Sunday to experience Wicker Park from a fresh perspective!
