One Last Sunday: Wicker Park's Farmers Market Closes Out Its 26th Season — With a Car-Free Street Party to Match

By Socialhood News · Wicker Park ·

There are Sundays in Wicker Park, and then there are Sundays worth circling on the calendar. October 25 is shaping up to be the latter. In eleven days, the neighborhood will mark the end of two beloved warm-weather traditions simultaneously: the final day of the Wicker Park Farmers Market's 26th outdoor season, and the last Meet Me on Milwaukee car-free street event of 2026 — both happening on the same morning on the same stretch of the neighborhood.

The Wicker Park Farmers Market, held at the park itself at 1425 N. Damen Ave., will run its closing market from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 25. The market launched its 26th outdoor season on May 3 and has run every Sunday since, making this its final week. This year's edition added more fruit and produce vendors to an already full roster that includes locally made cheeses, baked goods, meats, eggs, flowers, crafts, and artwork. For neighbors who have made the Sunday morning market a ritual since spring, the October 25 closing day carries the particular weight of a seasonal goodbye.

The market isn't just a place to pick up vegetables. Each Sunday has featured free yoga classes at 9 a.m. and Pilates at 10 a.m., kids' story time and crafts with Cruelty Free You + Me from 9 to 11 a.m., a kids' play area open until 1 p.m., and special programming from noon to 2 p.m. Canine Crews has also been on-site monthly at the Wicker Park Dog Park offering pet treats, dog food, and dog training classes. On closing day, all of that comes together one more time before the market goes on hiatus until next May.

One block east, Milwaukee Avenue will be doing something special of its own on the same morning. The final Meet Me on Milwaukee of 2026 — part of the Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce's summer and fall series — closes out the year on October 25, with Milwaukee Ave shut down to automobile traffic between the North/Damen intersection and Ashland from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The car-free corridor turns one of Chicago's most storied commercial streets into a pedestrian promenade for a full eight hours, giving neighbors room to walk, browse, and linger in a way the street's usual traffic doesn't permit.

The convergence of both events on the same day is the kind of neighborhood coincidence that feels almost planned. A shopper leaving the farmers market with a bag of apples and a bunch of late-season flowers can walk directly onto a car-free Milwaukee Avenue, browse the corridor's dense stretch of boutiques and restaurants, and be back home before the afternoon is out. For families, the overlap is especially practical: the market's kids' programming wraps up around 11 a.m. just as the car-free street is fully open and at its most walkable.

The timing also lands at a moment when Milwaukee Avenue's commercial roster is unusually full. Blank Street Coffee is preparing to open at 1588 N. Milwaukee Ave. in the former Starbucks Reserve space overlooking the six-way North/Damen/Milwaukee intersection, with no official opening date yet announced. Blundstone, the Tasmanian boot brand, is finalizing its first Illinois store at 1563 N. Milwaukee Ave. Even without those two yet open, the corridor has plenty to offer on a car-free Sunday.

For those who haven't made it to a Meet Me on Milwaukee event yet this year, October 25 is the last chance. For farmers market regulars, it's a closing-day ritual worth honoring. Both events are free and open to all. The market is at 1425 N. Damen Ave.; the car-free stretch runs along Milwaukee between North/Damen and Ashland.
